  1. Check out the new book pass & book trailer slides (spend between 15 – 35 minutes)
  2. Post a couple of titles you might want to read on the Indie Read padlet board to check-in for the day and be counted present

OFFICE HOURS:  Mrs. C will be in the zoom all day if you need help, have questions, or just want to stop by. See me if you need help posting in padlet.

MC Lit / English 5 – Wednesday, September 30th

BEFORE class – sign into the padlet board and post a new reading post-it (the new usual).

STAGGERED ZOOMS TODAY!  Check your time on GClassroom  – based on the novel you are reading for the Big Group Read.

WATCH & WRITE: In class, we’ll watch the video for your read & then create a notebook page with an entry responding to it.  After watching, what are you thinking?  Does it give you insight into the book you just read?  Can you make connections between the video and the book?  What are your impressions of this author?

NEW ASSIGNMENT:  Writing 3 (examining identity through poetry) – submit starting 10/2 and no later than end of day Sunday 10/4

WRITING 3 

PAST DUE:  If you stayed on target, you are finished with your Big Group Read.  Catch up if you’ve fallen behind.

MC Lit / English 5 – Monday, September 28th

As usual, update your reading (independent or your Big Group Read) on the Indie read Padlet board.  Then, at class time, sign into the Zoom call.

Quickwrite #7:  Work with the poetry in your for-class novel (Solo, Long Way Down, or The Poet X) as instructed

  • Choose a single poem you really like
  • List words within the poem that you like or list individual words that describe how it makes you feel or what it reminds you of
  • Consider and explain why you like those words
  • Compare the list of words you chose w/ the explanation

STUDY:  Thinking about how poetry works.  We’ll do some work in groups (based on the book you chose) to make discoveries about the poetry we are currently studying.

TO DO:  Keep reading to target for Wednesday (that’s the end of your book).

PAST DEADLINE:

  • Writing 2 was due 9/20 (Some students still need to complete this.  If it’s you, get on that. The assignment can be found on BOTH the GClassroom stream & the website on the posts from Sept. 16th.)
  • Time Audit (in your notebook) and the Time Audit Response (GForm) was due Friday 9/25. Find it on Friday’s Classroom stream.

Quickwrite #4: American Dream cartoon.  Thoughts?

Core Read: A Letter to My Nephew – James Baldwin (1962)

Notebook Work:

  1. Using the pdf of Baldwin’s letter, choose a line (or two) that feels important to you.
  2. Copy it word for word onto your notebook page (paper or digital).
  3. Put it in quotation marks since it is a quote.
  4. Underneath, share WHY you chose this quote?
  5. What does it say to you?  Why does it feel important?
  6. Does it apply to NOW – 2020?
  7. Continue to write any thoughts you have about the quote, related to the quote, things it reminds you of, etc.

TO DO:

  • Choose your BIG GROUP READ – Solo, The Poet X, or Long Way Down – and fill out the Google form indicating which book and how you are accessing it (this is on the slideshow attached to GClassroom!  (DO this TODAY! – We start this book next week)

TODAY – Complete the INDIVIDUAL READING RATE activity & GForm on GClassroom to check-in today.  Instructor OFFICE HOURS today from 9 – 12 & 12:30 – 2 (Zoom link on GClassroom).  Stop in with questions about the assignment, to get help on platform sign-up/use (Dropbox, Padlet, Flipgrid).

REMINDERS:

  • What are you reading?  YOU NEED A BOOK (email Mrs. C to request books for delivery OR find your own read)
  • Apply for a GC library card. (Pick up your real card at the main library and maybe get a FREE book).

DEADLINE:

  • Individual Reading Rate activity TODAY!!
  • CHOOSE your read for the BIG GROUP READ – You’ll need a book by Monday 9/21 – see the slideshow w/links & the GForm to choose your book no later than Wednesday 9/16. (You’ll find this on GClassroom on the stream)
