Rhetoric & Comp – Thursday, November 5th

WRITE:  Quickwrite #19 – Unlimited Power

STUDY:  Revision – a study of what to do with comments/feedback.  A full class look at a student’s memory book paper, teacher feedback, and revision. Join the padlet board “Revising from Commentary: A Study”.   And a slide review on “Manipulation & Control in Writing.” Then a look, in your WRITE CLUB groups, at some other student examples.

READ: “10 Things I’ve Been Meaning to Say to You” by Jason Reynolds

ASSIGNMENT/DEADLINE:  Write your own “Ten Things I’ve Been Meaning to Say to _______________” due anytime between Friday 11/6 and end of day Monday 11/9.

WRITING 5 – 10Things

UPCOMING:  Office Hours (stop by to ask questions or get help) & Student Paths Survey (about your plans after high school) on Friday.  Next week, reading like a writer and a look at the art of hip-hop/rap.

  • Give feedback including specific “good stuff,” readerly questions, and “what-if” suggestions

TO DO:  Think about revising papers in your Dropbox.  Focus on beginnings, endings, and Mrs. C’s 5-Word-Focus.

ASSIGNMENT:  Read REVISION handouts/excerpts and make just one notebook page about revision for Thursday 11/5

EXTRA:  Another round of Book Pass & Book Trailers up on today’s GClassroom stream in case you are looking for your next read.

UPCOMING:

  • Comments on your first submission will be headed back to you soon – starting with College Apps & then QW or MB chapters.  Check the video & “Feedback Manifesto” (on GClassroom stream later today) about receiving feedback and I’ll email you when your paper is back in Dropbox (with feedback).
  • Make time to enjoy some reading with the break offered by Student Progress (Parent-Teacher) Conferences and Election Day.

VIDEO MESSAGE + GFORM:  On the GClassroom stream, watch the mid-term message and complete the GForm to be counted present for today.

DEADLINE: Writing 4 (QW or MB) due no later than end of day Sunday 10/25 (and catch up on anything you haven’t done like move your SUB1 or record your Flipgrid audio…why are there people who haven’t done this?)

  • Donald Murray “Lead” from A Writer Teaches Writing & Tom Romano “In the Beginning” from Crafting Authentic Voice (pdfs on the GClassroom stream).  Choose/evaluate the best beginnings for an example piece by Tom Romano (padlet code – bestbegin).  WRITE CLUB groups for work with various beginnings (padlet code – starters).

REMINDERS:  Don’t get complacent with completion scores.  These ONLY indicate whether your work is complete and do NOT evaluate the quality of that work.  ALWAYS work to create your best work and continue to improve it as you learn more.
