Locker Clean-Out & Book Return – Senior English Reminders

You should have received word from GCHS about when to report for locker clean-out, book return, yearbook pickup, etc.  Senior returns are Tuesday & Wednesday (there is a specific schedule for when to report based on your last name – please check it).  You’ll need to report to the annex to get started and please wear a mask of some kind.

FOR MRS. C’s ENGLISH, please return the following:

English 8 – any classroom library books (I will send individual reminders, but if you happen to have any stray books, return those too), any BOOK CLUB books you still have.  DO NOT return your notebooks! Those are YOURS – I am NOT collecting them.

Rhetoric & Comp – any classroom library books (I will send individual reminders, but if you happen to have any stray books, return those too), any Hamlet books you still have. DO NOT return your notebooks! Those are YOURS – I am NOT collecting them.

DONATIONS: I have had students ask about donating to the class library.  If you have books that you know you won’t reread, and you don’t have younger siblings who will pick them up, and they will just sit on a shelf until your parent eventually takes them to Goodwill, drop them off when you return books.  BUT you’ll need to put them in a bag and label them for Mrs. Connolly or no one will know what they are for.  (If they are not quite right for the class library of 251, I promise to find them a good home in another class library – I have teacher friends both at GCHS and Coolidge.) Share the magic.

English 8 – Monday, May 11th – IMPT SENIORSWRITE! INFO!!!

DEADLINE: (REPOST) LAST/SENIOR PROJECT – info on the Seniors Write! portfolio style project (remote learning style).  See the handout here SENIORSWRITEeng8 *or on the SPRING2020 tab above and watch a video talk through with flipcode e8mg20 (check the new topic Seniors Write!). This project is due no later than the end of day Tuesday 5/12. (Basically, you write 4 short papers about yourself – one a day and you’re done in four days – or all at once.  Either way, there’s not much left after that). There are tutorials on the Flipgrid about how to make new folder (if you’ve forgotten) and what your SENIORSWRITE2020 folder should look like when it is complete.  Check them out.

IMPORTANT! – YOUR Seniors Write! folder has to be INSIDE the Submissions (or Drafts) folder for Mrs. C to see it.  IF you create a new, free-standing folder, and don’t put it IN the sub folder, then you have to specifically share it with me. Otherwise I CAN’T see it and it will look as if you did not do this project!!  PLEASE name your papers as indicated on the assignment sheet!!  It gets really confusing when you name them just whatever.

NOTE:  This project includes 4 papers: the COVID-19 letter, a “who I am” paper, a theme song paper, and a choose 1 (with 5 choices) – please write them ALL.   No research required.

QW EXTRA CREDIT INFO:  Check out the new topic on Flipgrid e8mg20 to see how you can show me your notebook entries virtually for bonus points.  KEEP YOUR NOTEBOOKS!  (They are yours.  Put them in a drawer or a closet or something.  You won’t believe how interesting they will be in a few years, when you can revisit your 17-year-old self).  Quickwrite evidence due by end of next Thursday 5/14.

Multi-Genre:  Several of you haven’t yet uploaded/recorded MG Presentations on the Flipgrid.  Check out a few of your friend’s projects while you are there.  You’ll find interesting work and amazing creativity.

Survey: Please fill out the end of course survey here:  English 8 Survey & Permission or through the link on Google classroom or through the email you will get later today (I will be recording in Skyward who has completed the survey & I’d love to get them all back by 5/13).

Thursday, April 30th – ALL CLASSES

VIRTUAL OFFICE HOURS today from 10a – 12p via zoom (original Tuesday/Thursday invite – I just sent it to everyone again in today’s email/Google classroom post).  Stop in if you have questions, want extra feedback, or just want to check in.

Keep moving forward and work toward finalizing those MG Papers.

 Mrs. C = )

P.S. For many of you who have finished that MG project, be sure to check out the new/last assignments that went out this week.  Be sure to check your respective class (English 8 has a project called Seniors Write! and Rhet-Comp has the finishing of the memory book we started fall semester).  Both have digital directions and specifics on what to write and where & how to turn it in.  This one’s about YOU!

Finalization Troubleshooting & MG Checklist Directions

Tips for Finalizing

  • Don’t forget to delete any comments in the margins made by Mrs. C or any other reviewers.  Use the review tab and delete all comments so they don’t show up in your polished PDF.
  • If you are using Google Docs, turns out you can’t “Save As” a PDF; you’ll need to DOWNLOAD as a PDF (you might then have to upload it again from wherever you computer downloaded it).
  • If you are unable to Save As a PDF or Download As a PDF (I’ve just become aware that if you are using the free version of Word online this is probably the case), try to make sure your paper is formatted the way you want and then let me know and I can convert it to PDF for you.
  • Don’t forget to change the document name to LastnameFINALMG so I know it’s the “done deal”

I’ll add more tips here as we come across roadblocks.  If you have suggestions or questions email Mrs. C 🙂

MG Checklist Directions

  1. Open the MG Checklist in your Dropbox drafts folder using MSWord
  2. Enter the page numbers (from your complete MG draft – aka Mark#2) in each box with a p. to show which page Mrs. C will find that genre on (not all of the boxes will be filled because not all of the pieces are required)
  3. Type in your project’s title and explain your unifying element in the appropriate spaces
  4. Type in other genres you added and their corresponding pages in the “extra genres you create” section
  5. Choose save and return to Dropbox
  6. CHANGE the document name to LastnameMGChecklist when this is complete

*Watch a video that explains this process with a screencast by visiting Flipgrid e8mg20 (for English 8) and rcmg20 (for Rhet-Comp) It’s in the MG Overview section.
