Book trailers & Indie read.  Quickwrite #9:  collect thinking from your analysis of critical review.  Assignment Intro:  DRAFT #2 – critical review

To Do:  start researching for your review (check quickwrites #8 for inspiration)

Deadlines:

  • If you haven’t uploaded your indelible moment paper for Mrs. C, you need to do so ASAP (like, it’s late, but I still need it!)
  • Draft of critical review paper due no later than classtime on Tuesday, Feb. 6th.

English 8 – Thursday, February 1st

Read aloud A Perfectly Messed Up Story by Patrick McDonnell.  Indie read.   Analysis:  reviews from yesterday.  Work in class, independently & together, to notice how the critical review “works.”

Plan what kind of entertainment genre YOU will review for your own writing.

Assignment:  From the 6 reviews (NEW!) provided in class, choose the one that is the same genre YOU want to review.  Read it.  Then make notes, highlight notices, & analyze what the writer is doing.  Bring this, COMPLETED, to class tomorrow.

Don’t Forget To:  Make adjustments, changes, additions to your papers based on the peer feedback you received in class yesterday.

Book talk & Indie read.  Don Murray’s “Read Like a Writer” from A Writer Teaches Writing.  Quickwrite #8:  Top 3 lists – list your top 3 movies, tv series, albums, concerts, books, video games.  Critical Review:  Read together a movie review of The Fault in Our Stars.   See what we can notice.  What is the writer doing?

Assignment:  From the 6 reviews provided in class, choose ONE.  Read it.  Then make notes, highlight notices, & analyze what the writer is doing.  Bring this, COMPLETED, to class tomorrow.

Book talk & Indie read.  Set up shared Dropbox Draft folders with WRITE CLUB members.  Copy your paper into them.  Read aloud:  “Sh***y First Drafts” from Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird.

TOMORROW:  WRITE CLUB for indelible moment papers – make sure your complete drafts are uploaded.

“Lab” day for indelible moments work.  (There’s a formatted template in our shared Dropbox folder that you can use to access WordOnline.  Plus, it’s already formatted correctly.)

Book talk & Indie read.  Quickwrite #7:  “Cop Car” – Explain how the lyrics of this song tell story.  Consider the points made in yesterday’s video.  Intro to WRITE CLUB:  rules & practice with an indelible moment draft by Mrs. C.  Leave me feedback, both positive & negative in Dropbox.
