Book trailers & Indie read.  Read Chapter 1 The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. DuBois & underline/highlight key ideas & statements.

If you had trouble with DuBois, reread the chapter for Monday.

Read aloud:  Last Stop on Market Street  by Matt de la Pena.  Indie read.  Quickwrite #2:  “Color Blind” by Joseph Capehart Notes/discussion:  What is Writing?  Intro to text study: The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. DuBois.

Rhetoric & Comp & MCL&R – Week #1 August 8 – 10

Welcome to class!

This week we:

  • set up notebooks
  • were introduced to course content & structure
  • wrote our “reading & writing “stories”/histories
  • passed & speed-dated books
  • talked abut independent reading (w/ a letter home)
  • read Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
  • took surveys about our reading & writing lives

Next up:  bring a book to read starting Monday, August 13th

(2nd hour – complete your surveys as homework since you were in the class meeting)

MC Lit & Rhetoric – Friday, December 15th

Indie read wrap-up!  And the stats are in:  Mrs. Connolly’s classes collectively read over 227,064 pages / 746 books this semester (voluntarily!!!).

Deadlines:

  • Fall Portfolio / Final due at start of your hour’s final exam period
    • 3rd hour – Tuesday 12/19 8:10am
    • 5th hour – Tuesday 12/19 1:10pm

Important:  There will be lab time available in room 251 during the 1st hour final and the 2nd hour final.  If you do NOT have another final to attend, you may attend lab time.  You MUST stay the entire two hour class/final period.

  • Book talks (with blogpost) by sign-up Oct. 30 – Dec. 15
