English 8 – Tuesday, February 20th

Book talk & Indie read.  Quickwrite #13:  Smell?  Read:  “Hit Dem Senses” from Crafting Authentic Voice by Tom Romano.  Find sensory image in the mentor text from Violent Ends.

For tomorrow:  Bring your print drafts of the first two papers as we will use them in class (you wrote optional beginnings on them a week or so ago).

Upcoming:  We will be improving our drafts and choosing a paper (this week) for submission (next week).

English 8 – Thursday, February 15th

Book talk & Indie read.  WRITE CLUB – photo memoir. (You’ll need papers to work with next week, so be sure to complete and/or fix-up your drafts.)

Use feedback from WRITE CLUB to fuel changes that improve, add-to, or otherwise enhance your paper.  Add the picture if you haven’t yet 🙂

Deadlines:

  • Technically, draft deadlines on DRAFT#1 (indelible moment), DRAFT#2 (critical review), and DRAFT#3 (photo memoir) have passed.  BUT. . .  if you haven’t finished and/or uploaded them, Mrs. C needs them!

  • Draft #3 for WRITE CLUB tomorrow.  Upload to BOTH the folder you share with Mrs. C and your personal draft folder you share with your WRITE CLUB.

Book talk & Indie read.  Quickwrite #11:  Waiting: The DJ Morrell Story How is the story told?  What do the writers do to lure you in? To keep you there?  How do they end it?  Consider how the images impact the storytelling (the place where photo/video and writing(words) meet).  Read:  “Mind Pictures” by Tom Romano.

Book trailers & Indie read. Quickwrite #10:  6 Photographers 1 ManBeginnings:  read “Lead” from A Writer Teaches Writing by Donald Murray.  In WRITE CLUB groups choose your favorite beginning for the sample piece by Tom Romano.

In addition to using the feedback received or realizations made in WRITE CLUB to make positive changes to the drafts in your Dropbox, take a look at your alternate beginnings and see if any might be better than your original.  (If you fell into a predictable trap of opening with a question, second-person, or a formula intro, choose one of your new openings, for sure). 🙂

Upcoming:  Photo Memoir papers!  You will need a photo of an inanimate (not-alive) object or piece of clothing from your life – one you can associate with a personal story.

Guest book talk & Indie read.  A look at beginnings – info slides.  Experiment by writing two alternate beginnings to each of your two drafts (indelible moment & critical review).  Copies of your papers were handed out for this purpose.  Bring them to class TOMORROW!

Book talk & Indie read.  Mini-lesson:  sentence starters – replacing/rearranging “TH” words, vague references, and personal pronouns.  Work time on critical reviews.

  • If you haven’t uploaded your indelible moment paper for Mrs. C, you need to do so ASAP (like, it’s late, but I still need it!)
  • Draft of critical review paper due no later than classtime on Wednesday, Feb. 7th.
