Deadline:  Draft #4 should have been uploaded already.  If you missed this deadline, finish your paper and upload asap. (You will need to submit this paper later, so be sure to write one).

How to Write YOUR Cited Commentary

*Avoid just summarizing

  1. Reread article/essay/poem.
  2. What are YOU thinking?
  3. Write about it.
  4. Go back and find where info in sources can be used to back you up or enhance your point (that’s what you quote &/or paraphrase).
  5. Use MLA in-text citations.
  6. Add a Works Cited page.

Deadline:  Draft #4 needs to be uploaded for WRITE CLUB no later than classtime tomorrow!

Book talk & Indie read. Watch/Read:  “The Chambers of a Gun” by Zanne Langlois from Button Poetry on YouTube.  Quickwrite #16:  react, respond, and comment on the poem “The Chambers of a Gun”

Notebook:

  1. Quote something from the poem (w/ citation) & then rewrite with author mentioned in YOUR text (alter the citation)
  2. Paraphrase something from the poem (w/citation) & then rewrite with author mentioned in YOUR text (alter the citation)
  3. Use Easybib.com to create an MLA works cited entry for this source & copy into your notebook

Info on Draft #4 – cited commentary.  Tomorrow you’ll have time to work in class on this paper.

Read aloud & Indie read.  Read:  “The Boys Are Not All Right” by Michael Ian Black from The New York Times.  Quickwrite #15:  react, respond, and comment on the editorial article “The Boys Are Not Alright”

Notebook:

  1. Quote something from the article (w/ citation)
  2. Paraphrase something from the article (w/citation)
  3. Use Easybib.com to create an MLA works cited entry for this source & copy into your notebook

Deadlines:  If you don’t have 3 existing drafts (indelible moment, critical review, photo memoir) get them.  If you haven’t revised and renamed one to be “teacher-ready” SUB#1, do so asap.

Book trailers & Indie read.  Submission sheet for SUB#1 (first teacher-ready draft).  On your paper copy, highlight the best sentence(s) and then work to make it all that good.  Lab time.

Deadline:  Upload your teacher-ready SUB#1 to our shared Dropbox folder no later than class time on Monday 2/26.  Be sure to name your document appropriately (and be sure it is the version you want Mrs. C to assess).

English 8 – Thursday, February 22nd

Book talk & Indie read.  “Cleaning up” your word choices:  watch 29 Words to Cut From Your Novel – Vivien Reis.  Read:  43 Words You Should Cut from Your Writing Immediately – Diana Urban

Next, you will be submitting for evaluation and feedback one of the three drafts you have written.  Choose wisely.

Work to notice unnecessary, redundant, and clumsy word choices and make better ones.

Tomorrow:  Lab time for work on Submission #1.

 

English 8 – Wednesday, February 21st

Book talk & Indie read.  Read:  “25 Things You Should Know About Endings” from The Kick-Ass Writer by Chuck Wendig.

For tomorrow:  Write an alternate ending for each of your 3 drafts (indelible moment, critical review, and photo memoir).  Use the print copies given out in class.

Upcoming:  We will be improving our drafts and choosing a paper (this week) for submission (next week).
