Rhetoric & Comp – Thursday, November 19th

BOOK TALK!

WRITE:  Quickwrite #22 – Watch the video below & react/respond/think in yournotebook for 3 minutes.  (Note:  It’s a student-made video about the fatigue of remote learning – not trying to upset anyone – reactions will vary.)

STUDY: Quick review of using quotes in your writing. Quoting & Citing Tips for Rhetorical Analysis

CREATE:  Taking our rap annotations to the next place – rhetorical analysis.  What you are essentially writing is an essay.  And essay, as a genre, takes the specific and makes it universal (hint: so do most of your rap/hip-hop songs).  Use the assignment sheet below and let’s get writing (time to write in breakout rooms).

DEADLINE:  WRITING 6 (rap rhetorical analysis) due anytime between Friday 11/20 and end of day Sunday 11/22

PAST DUE:  Digital Submission #2 w/ audio (was due 11/15 see past posts for details)

ONGOING:  Consider how you will use your feedback & commentary to revise your existing papers.

REMINDERS & UPDATES:  Don’t forget it’s not too late to complete writing that you skipped earlier in the semester.  Check out the page tabs at the top of the website to find RHETORIC & COMP – WRITING ASSIGNMENTS & RHETORIC & COMP – NOTEBOOK CHECKLIST.  Next weekend (Thanksgiving holiday) would be a great time to make sure your notebook entries are caught up.

Rhetoric & Comp – Tuesday, November 17th

Visit the SIGN IT! padlet board and add your name as a comment on the appropriate post-it to indicated how many books you’ve read so far this semester.

WRITE:  Quickwrite #21 – Watch the video below and repsond/react/think in your notebook for 3 minutes.

WATCH/THINK:  For a closer look at how rap operates (within beats, across bars, with rhyme, etc.) check out the video below.

ASSIGNMENT/DEADLINE:    RAP Lyric Annotation due no later than classtime Thursday 11/19  (time in class for starting & questions)

READ:  Why Study Rhetoric? or, What Freestyle Rap Teaches Us about Writing  by Kyle D. Stedman

WRITE:  Quickwrite #20 (Part I) – Watch the 1st 3 videos below and respond or comment in your notebook.  Work to write the entire 3 minutes.

WRITE:  Quickwrite #20 (Part II) – Watch the TV excerpt (in-class only) and video below and continue the entry you started earlier in your notebook.  Work to write the entire 3 minutes.

Excerpts from Dear White People Season 1:Episode 5 – w/ scholarly discussion of language use.

STUDY:  The ART OF HIP-HOP/RAP overview w/ rhetorical emphasis and assignment pre-view (attached to today’s GClassroom stream)

ASSIGNMENT:  Select lyrics to a hip-hop/rap song for use next week.  Due no later than classtime Tuesday 11/17.

READ:  Why Sharing Your Writing is Good for You by Kerstin Pilz, PhD

SHARE:  Your “10 Things” paper with random classmates (we’ll use breakout rooms for this)

STUDY:  Read Like a Writer (as a class) with excerpt & example annotations Read-LIke-a-Writer-Analysis-of-Craft PK & KWR.

Then, let’s work together to analyze Jason Reynolds’ “10 Things I’ve Been Meaning to Say to You” (you’ll find this in a shared Dropbox folder)

ASSIGNMENTS/DEADLINES:  Digital Submission #2 no later than end of day Sunday 11/15 (w/ Flipgrid audio)

WRITE:  Quickwrite #19 – Unlimited Power

STUDY:  Revision – a study of what to do with comments/feedback.  A full class look at a student’s memory book paper, teacher feedback, and revision. Join the padlet board “Revising from Commentary: A Study”.   And a slide review on “Manipulation & Control in Writing.” Then a look, in your WRITE CLUB groups, at some other student examples.

READ: “10 Things I’ve Been Meaning to Say to You” by Jason Reynolds

  • Give feedback including specific “good stuff,” readerly questions, and “what-if” suggestions

TO DO:  Think about revising papers in your Dropbox.  Focus on beginnings, endings, and Mrs. C’s 5-Word-Focus.

ASSIGNMENT:  Read REVISION handouts/excerpts and make just one notebook page about revision for Thursday 11/5

EXTRA:  Another round of Book Pass & Book Trailers up on today’s GClassroom stream in case you are looking for your next read.

UPCOMING:

  • Comments on your first submission will be headed back to you soon – starting with College Apps & then QW or MB chapters.  Check the video & “Feedback Manifesto” (on GClassroom stream later today) about receiving feedback and I’ll email you when your paper is back in Dropbox (with feedback).
  • Make time to enjoy some reading with the break offered by Student Progress (Parent-Teacher) Conferences and Election Day.
