MC Lit / English 5 – Friday, September 25th

Complete the TIME AUDIT ACTIVITY on GClassroom.

  1. Watch the video & complete the notebook work (takes about 15 minutes)
  2. Fill out the Time Audit response form (attached to the stream) to check-in for the day and be counted present

OFFICE HOURS:  Mrs. C will be in the zoom all day if you need help, have questions, or just want to stop by.

BEFORE class – sign into the padlet board and post a new reading post-it.  Include what you are reading, the page # of your progress & the date 9/23.  Keep doing this each class day as a check-in.

Quickwrite #4: American Dream cartoon.  Thoughts?

Core Read: A Letter to My Nephew – James Baldwin (1962)

Notebook Work:

  1. Using the pdf of Baldwin’s letter, choose a line (or two) that feels important to you.
  2. Copy it word for word onto your notebook page (paper or digital).
  3. Put it in quotation marks since it is a quote.
  4. Underneath, share WHY you chose this quote?
  5. What does it say to you?  Why does it feel important?
  6. Does it apply to NOW – 2020?
  7. Continue to write any thoughts you have about the quote, related to the quote, things it reminds you of, etc.

TO DO:

  • Choose your BIG GROUP READ – Solo, The Poet X, or Long Way Down – and fill out the Google form indicating which book and how you are accessing it (this is on the slideshow attached to GClassroom!  (DO this TODAY! – We start this book next week)
  • Read something awesome at least 15 minutes!

  • What are you reading?  YOU NEED A BOOK (email Mrs. C to request books for delivery OR find your own read)
  • Apply for a GC library card. (Pick up your real card at the main library and maybe get a FREE book).

NEW ANNOUCEMENT:  Mrs. C worked this summer on a fundraiser to help provide books by Black authors for students in our Granite City community.  And the books are here!  We have partnered with the GC Library and this month, when you go into the main library (Delmar Ave.) to pick up your library card, while supplies last you can get a FREE book just for you.  It’s for kids ages 4 – 18, so your younger siblings can participate too.  There are a variety of titles to help you gain perspective, see yourself, or just enjoy an awesome book.  Check it out!!

How to Notebook – some quick notes on what to write in a notebook entry when you are asked to react/respond to something you read, watch, or listen to.

Watch & then create a NOTEBOOK entry in YOUR digital notebook:

  • Open Dropbox
  • Choose the file view (click all files on the left)
  • Select YOUR digital notebook folder & open it
  • Click the blue CREATE A FILE button
  • ALWAYS choose Word Document
  • Write HERE for 3 minutes (use tips from HOW TO NOTEBOOK to guide you
  • Use the center of the blue bar (in Word online) to rename your doc QW2 9-2 History Reconsidered
  • Choose Save & Return to Dropbox

To start our study of Black writers in America, we are going to start current and work back into the past.  Today, we read the opening chapter of Stamped by Jason Reynolds & Ibram X Kendi.  You can find a pdf of this chapter on the Google classroom post today.  Then create a notebook page (this time on a piece of paper?) to make some notes on what seems important here. Again, use tips from HOW TO NOTEBOOK to guide your thinking/writing.

WRITING ASSINGMENT #1:  WRITING 1

DEADLINES:

  • YOU need a book to read by Friday – whatever you want to read
  • Writing #1 due in Dropbox (follow the directions on the assignment page) anytime Friday 9/4 until end of day Sunday, 9/6.

REMINDERS:   Post-it in Padlet, Intro video in Flipgrd, and MOST important – DROPBOX – set up and share folders!

IMPORTANT:  Stop in to office hours on Friday (check Classroom for the zoom invite) if you need help with platforms or have questions about the assignment.

MC Lit / English 5 – Monday, August 31st

Meet via ZOOM.  Digital notebook setup & QW#1:  “so far?”

  • Open your DROPBOX (If you haven’t done set-up, now’s the time. Use the directions found on the DROPBOX SET-UP tab above).
  • Open your “______’S Digital Notebook” folder and choose CREATE A FILE
  • Choose WORD document – it’s the 4th one down (Dropbox will take you to Word Online)
  • Type QW#1: So Far? at the top and spend 3 minutes writing about the school year so far.  How was last week?  You can write in general or about this class.  What are you looking forward to? What is frustrating?  How are you feeling?
  • Rename the document by clicking the center of the blue bar (above where you are typing – it should say Document)
  • Change the name to QW 1 8-31 (the quickwrite # and the date) and then click SAVE AND RETURN TO DROPBOX)
  • Done deal.  This is how we will do notebook entries most class days.  Be sure to change document names or we will end up with folders full of documents titled “document” (which is super confusing).

Add two more documents INSIDE your digital notebook folder.

  1. What I’m Reading Now – you will be adding whatever you are reading by choice on this page (title the document “What I’m Reading Now” using the same directions as above).
  2. To Be Read – you will keep a list of things you might want to read in the future (title this doc “TBR”)

Independent reading focus:  virtual book pass & book trailers.  Add titles to your To Be Read list.  GOAL 1:  Find something to read this week (by Friday)

  • Go back to the Google Classroom post and notice the 2 slide shows attached to the post.
  • One has book trailers – 20 books with links to their trailers – check them out.
  • The other is a virtual book pass – 21 books with a picture of the back/inside jacket to give you a bit about the book.  Check them out too.
  • Add any titles that might interest you to your TBR page.

REMINDERS:

  • Set-up Dropbox, Flipgrid, Padlet, & apply for a GC library card.
  • If you want to borrow books from Mrs. C or the school Media Center, email Mrs. C your requests.
